But I'll add this: any such system requires ubiquity, and one could never expect companies to come crawling and drop their existing identity infrastructure. Microsoft tried this and failed miserably, because it's not the companies who want Single Sign-On, it's the customers. To create the network effects necessary for success, the system would need to import and export trust relationships from a variety of other systems. Make it easy for the customer to synchronize and segment their cell phone directory, IM buddies on multiple networks, blogrolls, MySpace friends, corporate address book, blog comment white-lists, little black books, etc.).

Not sure this idea will catch on, but it would help emergency workers to find vital information in your cell phone directory.

Paramedics in Ottawa have recently urged the public to try a different way of storing their emergency phone numbers in their cell phones. What you would do is create a new contact entry in your cell phone directory called ‘ICE’ which stands for in-case-of-emergency. Apparently this idea came from a thoughtful British paramedic who was involved with treating casualties during the subway bombings last summer in London, England.

I've started getting clever telemarketing messages on my cell phone and I've always wondered how they get my number.

I must have been out of the loop, because somehow I missed last year’s panic-inspiring news about a cell phone directory. The assurances were that this was an "opt-in" program only. Don’t know about that, but somehow our private cell numbers got out in the open. Regardless, I took the extra step to put both our numbers on the national Do Not Call List.

The idea of putting an ICE (In Case of Emergency) entry in your cell phone is picking up steam in the U.K. after the tube bombs.

It is an idea (following the London bombings) that each person can and should do.

Put in your cell phone directory the name ICE then put a number to call for notification of an emergency. A wife a parent etc...

Lots of posts this weekend about being away from the cell phone and Internet. I guess some people actually went outside!

but yeah, it's been an excellent start to the weekend. i slept for heaven knows how long and am just now starting my day, and it's past 3:00pm! it's such a gorgeous day. my housemate is out on our deck on his inflatable mattress sunbathing - a great sight. what's even funnier is that he has his laptop out there too, and is currently talking on his cell phone. how our technology follows us everywhere. i think we just like connection, or the ability to connect, at any time, you know? i can pick up my cell phone, email a friend, sign onto AIM - someone will be available or online to talk with, share with, connect with. in that sense, our telecommunication technology is a blessing i suppose. but i also think there's something to be said of the inability to be alone - or, at least, my inability to be alone. i remember i was at a train station and had another half hour before the train was to arrive. there was no one there, except some sketchy-looking middle-aged guy waiting for the same train. i had 30 minutes to kill and i decided to go through my cell phone directory to find someone to talk to. i realized that i need to learn to just be with myself.
