Skype's The Limit

phone skype screenshot The economics of long distance calling improve dramatically with Skype.

To make Skype-to-phone calls, you buy blocks of $10 credits that you use up at a rate of 2.1 cents per minute on calls to the 48 contiguous United States, Canada, most of Europe, Hong Kong, China ... and a whole mess of other countries. Better yet, Skype tracks your calls as you make them, ready to export to CSV file so you can track your phone usage for billing or tax purposes.

Economist VoIP Impact Counter Argument

On VoIP economics.

His second argument is a false restriction of users options to only two: mobile phones and wired landline phones. I would have had to agree if this restriction was accurate and users would have to have both wireless phones and landline phones. However, there is a new class of UMA hybrid phones that will allow users to keep their beloved mobile phones as their only phone, while also allowing them to take advantage of commodity VoIP services using WIFI. When this class of device arrives, users will begin to drastically reduce their usage of expensive wireless minutes in favor of commodity WIFI minutes when and where WIFI is available. Even if convenient WIFI access is only available in users homes and possibly at their offices, that is still the largest chunk of phone use scenarios that the average mobile phone user experiences.

Enjoying Internet From Mobile With GPRS

I think GPRS and other high speed cell phone implementations of TCP/IP are taking off in countries with more mobiles and less wired infrastructure.

Today,I have succeed in connecting the internet from my mobile LG b2000. I was just waiting for data cable, which was unavailable in Pune. LG mobile service centre in Pune gave me Data cable today. I am quite happy with the speed. While connecting, the dialer shows speed 115 Kbps. Actual speed is 30 to 40 Kbps. But speed is constant and do not vary like ordinary landline phones. From today, I can use internet without fear of large phone bills. Airtel charges 5 Rs. per day for GPRS facility. With my prepaid connection, I can start and stop my GPRS facility anytime. So I can use internet for some days and then can stop. I just have to pay for the days which had GPRS facility on. This is nice. I am going to use GPRS service all days.

Pollsters Left Out in Cell Phone World

Pollsters and telemarketers have to adapt in the new cell phone world.

The rapid growth in cell-phone only households is pressuring public opinion researchers to adapt their surveying methods, which are based heavily on telephone interviews of people with traditional landline phones.

Australia Starts SMS On Home Phones

SMS is very popular outside the U.S. This deployment to home phones in Australia looks promising if somewhat limited.

Swisscom ISDN subscribers (these phones come with a screen), enable users to send SMS from a land line phone to a subscriber to any of the three mobile operators, but only Swisscom mobile users are able to reply to the SMS.

No Rush To Internet Phones

Internet phones are all the craze, but they do lack important features that land line phones provide.

Although I'm generally an early adopter, I haven't rushed to join the folks cutting the cord to their landline phones to sign up for Internet phone service.

Nepalese Cell Phones Cut Off

Talk about a regulation nightmare:

About a third of Nepal’s telephone lines are cellular, and while landline phones and Internet links were restored a week after the king’s surprise announcement, there’s no sign that cell phones — the communications method of choice for government opponents — will be working anytime soon.
