Greetings From Dublin
We’ve decided on not getting a landline at home, and are instead going with an internet phone. For geeks, our skype handle is nathanielstern (Hilary, this means you can call us for free from Trudy and Dan’s!), and messaging us will “call” our new skype phone once we are online. For non-geeks, all this means is that we will actually have an AMERICAN telephone number you can call - local rates for our US friends, and cheaper calls from SA! Other contact details below. We’ll give out that number to interested parties via email, once we have it.

Mobile Broadband
Someone recently drew may attention to this article in the New York Times. It’s a consumer-level survey of mobile broadband devices available in the States; things like the Telecom T3G and Vodafone 3G cards we put in our laptops here.

Voice Over IP Checklist
First of all, plugging in to Internet phones requires gear that not every household has. You must have an always-on broadband connection, either DSL or cable, and you need a spare Ethernet port on your hub or router to plug the Internet phone gateway into.

Frustrated, Herring contacted Madison River Communications, the rural phone company that provides his digital subscriber line (DSL) connection. The company said it was blocking calls from Internet phone companies. Outraged, Herring and Vonage complained to federal regulators.

Internet Service In Viet Nam
Its a cool 90 degrees F here and I just killed a baby cockroach in our bathroom. At least we get an internet connection in our room, but its more of an ISDN speed. I think they split 1 ASDL connection with 10 rooms. Too bad I can’t get my internet phone working now; people can hear me, but I can’t hear them.

PGP VoIP
First there was PGP e-mail. Then there was PGPfone for modems. Now Phil Zimmermann, creator of the wildly popular Pretty Good Privacy e-mail encryption program, is debuting his new project, which he hopes will do for internet phone calls what PGP did for e-mail.

Skype In Kosovo
On the tech front, my friend Eric, who’s currently doing anti-corruption work in Kosovo, introduced me to a nifty new (to me) internet phone and chat program: Skype. It was developed by the same folks who did Kazaa, and like Kazaa it uses distributed computing and networking. You can talk back and forth over the computer for free, and there’s also the option to call landlines at some ridiculously cheap cost. I’ve talked back and forth with Eric serveral times, and the sound quality is spot-on, which is mighty impressive considering the sketchy net/bandwidth situation in Kosovo.

First Look At AOL Internet Phone Service
Voxilla has posted a review of AOL CallWays Internet Phone Service. Using the familiar combination of functionality and advertising, AOL has created what many hope will be the catalyst for the VoIP explosion. AOL CallWays is call management application that interfaces with a supplied telephone adapter to allow subscribers to make calls from within the AOL CallWays interface. Users can call from their telephone, launch calls from their contact manager, listen to e-mail messages and reply by phone, and obtain voice mail from anywhere in the world.

Calling the Grandkids
Someone needs to talk to the grandkids! All the other grandparents live locally, see the kids a LOT more than I do and have ongoing relationships. I don’t call very often because I’m frugal with my money, and I don’t have a cell phone with unlimited minutes and free long distance and all that stuff. I did suggest that my kids look into Skype, an online free internet phone system, so that I could call them more often. No one said they would. (I do call every now and again, just not very...

EarthLink to Expand VoIP, Offer Dual Cell/WiFi Phone
EarthLink reportedly plans to expand its VoIP service with plans to launch an IP telephony and broadband Internet service bundle. EarthLink currently offers VoIP service by reselling Vonage. The company said it plans to expand its VoIP service by building its own, non-Vonage service. The company plans to launch dual VoIP/broadband service later this year for roughly $70 per month. EarthLink said it expects to generate up to $500 million per year from VoIP by 2009, with market penetration of 2 percent of US households.

Dialing 911 on an Internet Phone is Calling in Sick in NYC
The City and NYPD are trying to figure out a way for internet phone service providers like Vonage to let their customers tap into the actual 911, versus an ordinary police line, when they call 911. Currently, many internet phone service companies just route their calls to the phone line police officers use to call in sick. There's something terribly twisted about that. The City has asked them not to use that phone as the designated "911," and...

Prediction: WiMax-Skype Versus Mobile Operator
The only show stopper seems to be traditional voice communication. WiMax providers alone cannot provide such service, but as third-party Internet phone providers mature, this show stopper goes away. And it is quickly going away--consider another announcement today that Skype, the leading Internet phone service, launched a service where you can purchase a real phone number with voice mail and accept calls over the Internet. Just put SkypeIn (what the new service is called) on a handset, and you've got a real battle. And why not go further and put it on the hyped Motorola/Ipod handset, which is already facing resistanceby the mobile phone operators?

Screaming For, About VoIP
Very interesting.Nonetheless, the growing popularity of Net phone services has proven that what could have been a passing technology fad is becoming a permanent fixture for how many people make phone calls. More "traditional" phone companies are rolling out Internet phone services -- which are often cheaper and more flexible for customers -- after realizing that upstarts like Vonage Holdings Corp. continue to attract a lot of buzz and substantial business.
Many incumbent providers and legislators have taken a different stance over fears that standards like 911 calling and other features -- as well as revenue sources from phone taxes and other fees -- may be impacted by the rise of Internet phone calling technology. Traditional phone companies, while offering some VoIP services, also are leery of losing control and marketshare to upstart Internet firms.

Explain It? I Just Use It
A recent study done by SunRocket, a Virginia based VoIP provider showed that nearly 85% of the people had heard about VoIP. More importantly, over 20% of the 2,228 respondents were already using a VoIP service of some kind. While this figure is an example of the quick spread of Internet phone services, many did not completely understand how the technology actually worked. For instance, only half knew that you did not have to route calls directly through a computer or could use a regular telephone to make calls. On the other...
