If Skype doesn't work for your VOIP calls, might want to give Gizmo a try.

I just installed Gizmo, a free IP Phone software for PC, Linux, Mac. Nothing special really. Just that it’s not as big as Skype - both in popularity and in download - which I like. I got a bit annoyed with Skype, because of the delays, feedbacks, bad connections etc. Okay I know it all has to do with your internet connection etc, but I find it can’t be only that.

In all the competition between Gizmo and Skype, the consumer is the big winner.

Well this news has been popping up around the net today and it’s HUGE! You might remember, probably do, that Skype some time ago made all outgoing calls from its software in Canada and US free and unlimited? Ha, well guess what? Its competitors just did! All outgoing calls around the WORLD are free! Oh yeah, that’s right GIZMO just made all outgoing calls free!

Gizmo is a good alternative to Skype and uses less proprietary protocols.

A group of VOIP programmers has created a great alternative to Skype. Gizmo, “a free phone for your computer,” allows you to connect to other users of the Gizmo network (Gizmo to Gizmo) using your computer for absolutely no cost. Incoming and outcoming phone numbers allow you to receive and make calls to cell and landline phones for very little cost (as low as $0.01 per minute).

It's true that Gizmo and Skype support more platforms than Yahoo.

Well, who will use a platform specific services such as Yahoo! whilst you can have an alternative that is available on most major platforms? Personally, since Skype and Gizmo run on Mac and Linux in addition to Windows - Yahoo!, until it provides full Linux and Mac OS X support, will not even be an option. Sorry, Yahoo!

Comments on skype versus gizmo, anyone?

Now, I just have to decide between Skype and Gizmo. Then I’ll quit stressing out over little things. Any feedback on either of those would rock. Which is better in your opinion?

But wait, enter Gizmo. It has the same download, ease of use of Skype, but it is based on the standard SIP architecture, and they chare for phone company access in dollars (cheaper than Skype for US calls, more expensive for Europe calls). They will give you a regular phone line dial tone for incoming calls for $5/mo plus usage charges, plus free voice mail (which you can use without a computer, just with a SIP box, as I do with VoicePulse).
