Free Croaking Ringtones
Environmental group offers free endangered wildlife ringtones. The ringtones include Frogs, wolves, whales and birds. The activists hope to connect with tech-savvy generation. By 2008, as many as 30 percent of wireless users are likely to give up their land lines and nearly all cell phones will have Internet capabilities. The idea for the free ringtones of endangered and rare species is a way to educate people, especially the younger, technologically savvy generation.

Coast To Coast Ring Tones
Just for fun, Moderati compared the top download lists for the East vs. West Coast, using area code as a proxy for region. Although far from scientific in an age of number portability, some interesting trends emerged. Dr. Dre's 2000 release, Still Dre, remained on the top of the West Coast charts, ending 2005 as the #4 most downloaded tone, compared with an East Coast ranking of #19. Those back East seem to prefer the mob-drenched theme of the Godfather, bringing it in at #3, compared with a #14 ranking from Angelenos.Unfortunately, these are not free ringtones.

For Fans Of The Big O
The piece in that episode is in fact Chopin’s Prelude #15, Opus 28 in D flat (known more colloquially as “The Raindrop Prelude”). As a bonus, I’ve decided to make available the edited version I made specifically for use as an “alarm” (if it can even be called that). Click here to download. (In the actual piece, there’s a loud, boisterous fast bit in the middle that wasn’t appropriate to the use I intended for it.) As before, it is recorded at a low volume to accomodate the fact that alarm sounds become progressively louder on cell phones as they are allowed to play.

How Kids Set the (Ring) Tone
When he needs to figure out what his company should be doing next, Daniel Kranzler often seeks expert advice--from his 18- year-old daughter. Kranzler's company, Mforma, makes games and ringtones for cell phones and, by staying plugged in to teens like Kat, has seen sales double every few months. He's not alone. An explosion is under way in the cell-phone business, as innovative new companies are popping up, feeding not just teen tastes but also, in the process, defining a new future for wireless communications. Kranzler inked a deal in December...
Teenagers right now are "the sweet spot," says Burris of Sprint. An estimated 76% of kids ages 15 to 19 and 90% of people in their early 20s regularly use their cell phones for text messaging, ringtones and games, and that enthusiasm has turned wireless data services into a significant business. Gartner Research estimates that Americans spent $1.2 billion last year on ringtones, wallpaper and other "personalization" services and an additional $1.4 billion on cell-phone games and other entertainment. Fabrice Grinda, CEO of one of the leading ringtone...
