Verizon publicó la semana pasada los resultados unas pruebas llevadas a cabo con su red con p4p, y según parece hasta el 58% del tráfico P2P puede obtenerse desde el interior de su red Internet.

Happy Anniversary

The Verizon contract keeps this blogger from getting a working phone until his service anniversary.

Margaret sent me to the Verizon store yesterday because the microphone on my cell phone no longer works. I didn’t come away with an audible sell, because the very patient Verizon franchisee explained that I wasn’t eligible for a new phone till April 8 — at which time I could receive a “free” phone if I re-upped for another two-year contract.

For the first night of the entire trip, my Verizon internet service and my Verizon phone are totally out of range. I am writing this at 8:30 Monday night but it will not be posted until we are within range of something, tomorrow we hope.

Verizon To Offer Live NFL TV

phones nfl Get a Verizon phone, and you'll never miss on NFL game.

The National Football League and Verizon Communications have agreed to deliver live NFL Network sports and entertainment programming via Verizon's consumer broadband services, beginning Dec. 7 with the matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns. Verizon already offers the NFL Network television channel to subscribers of its FiOS TV Service and is the only Internet service provider to deliver selected NFL Network programming over broadband.

Google's Eric Schmidt says advertising will pay for cellphones.

I’m sure that the Verizon’s and Cingular’s of the world are loving that comment. No wonder they are choosing their own search platforms and not Google. But not everyone is scared of the big G, at least in Europe.

Qwest Rebates

Click through for the whole story on Qwest rebates.

Qwest: The spirit of service! Just not rebates!: I had had free Internet at the home for about 8 months when it finally got shut down. No problem. I looked at both a cable modem and DSL. I know, I know. DSL stinks in comparison no matter how many Verizon or Qwest commercials tell you otherwise (do people still use dial-up?!). That said, there was an offer for $25 off and only $19.99 per month for the first year for DSL from Qwest. I bit and went for it. Flash forward a few months later.

MoveOn And Net Neutrality

A net neutrality call for action against Verizon and other players.

Some senators think the public doesn’t care about this issue. They think we don’t know companies like AT&T and Verizon are spending millions lobbying Congress to eliminate Net Neutrality and give them more over control of the Internet. But petition deliveries in 50 locations across the nation next week will prove them wrong.

Why Does Verizon Have So Many Subscribers?

Click through for answers to Verizon's success.

T-Mobile’s strengths were a good handset lineup and the cheapest prices amongst all the major US carriers (their prepaid “T-Mobile To Go” service is really good in terms of pricing and phones, too). But if prices and phones were all that mattered, everyone in the US with a mobile phone would be using T-Mobile right now. So why does Verizon have so many subscribers?

Waiting For Verizon

Waiting for a job offer from Verizon may be more stressful than waiting for a Verizon service tech.

On May 24th I took a test for a Verizon job and, at the time, their machine for doing the grading was not working so they had to mail out the tests to get graded. We were told that we’d hear back within two weeks. So I waited…

Verizon Wireless: Chaperone

phones gps map It's 11pm. Do you know where your children are?

Last week Verizon Wireless announced a brand new service, entitled “Chaperone”, which is intended to help parents keep track of their children. The new “chaperone” service works by tracking the child’s phone by using the GPS technologies, which the majority of new phones have. This service goes a step further by plotting their child’s location on a real-time map which is accessible either from Verizon’s website or from the parent’s phone.

Seems a little creepy to me.

Net Neutrality Bill Spun And Stalled

Will net neutrality legislation take the path of immigration reform ... nowhere?

Senators and Representatives may have been a little surprised by the amount of heat the net neutrality issue has been generating. Both chambers of Congress have seen extensive lobbying from pro and anti-neutrality groups. The pro neutrality lobby is an odd collection of bedfellows. MoveOn.org, the Christian Coalition, Gun Owners of America, Microsoft, Google and a host of others have all signed on to keep the common carriage rules in place — that is to maintain the open-access-for-all model that we have now. The anti-neutrality lobby is comprised primarily of big telcos –- AT&T, BellSouth, Cingular and Verizon –- that want the FCC to allow packet prioritization, which would introduce a new pay-to-play internet.

Airfone Service In For A Rough Landing?

phones verizon airfone Boeing's Connexion satellite ISP service for airlines is also running into economic problems.

Verizon inherited the Airfone service when it bought GTE in 2000. And it hasn’t made any profits since from the phones aboard a thousand United, US Airways, Continental and Delta Airlines aircraft. Airfone’s pricey service just wasn’t worth it - customers with their own wireless handsets were willing to hold off on making calls until landing, rather than pick up that Airfone.

Blogs Taking Internet Fight To Congress

More on Internet neutrality, bloggers, and ISPs like Verizon.

What's remarkable about this result is the shift that occurred on Capitol Hill in the week prior to the vote. An unlikely coalition of political activists from the right and left, consumer groups, bloggers and Internet gurus banded together at SavetheInternet.com and sent more than 250,000 letters to Congress. This sparked an Internet revolt among bloggers who heaped scorn upon any member of the House who dared side with companies like AT&T and Verizon, which are spending millions of dollars in Washington to dismantle the rules that would stop their plans to control Internet content.

Digital Disney Trial

phones soap net screen The telcos are pulling out all the stops to provide TV programming ... even if it's not regularly scheduled programming.

In the announced deal, ABC shows like “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” will be offered on abc.com for consumption while SoapNet’s as-yet-to-be-named programming will be available only to Verizon DSL customers. This is only guaranteed for two months - May and June - the “trial” period. However, if everything succeeds as I expect it to - this service will not only continue but will be matched by NBC, CBS, and FOX. Nothing could be better for the viewing public in my opinion.

I was tired of not having bluetooth and other fun things like that on my Samsung a670 phone from Verizon, so I went out today at lunch and bought a new one. I got the Motorola E815 (also from Verizon). It’s not the newest phone out there, but of the phones that Verizon offers it’s the cheapest one with bluetooth, a speakerphone, and (even though it doesn’t say so on the Verizon website) EV-DO. It’s also got a much bigger and nicer screen so I won’t have to scroll as much with text messages and pictures will look prettier.

End Of The Internet?

It's like 1984 in 2006.

Verizon, Comcast, Bell South and other communications giants are developing strategies that would track and store information on our every move in cyberspace in a vast data-collection and marketing system, the scope of which could rival the National Security Agency. According to white papers now being circulated in the cable, telephone and telecommunications industries, those with the deepest pockets--corporations, special-interest groups and major advertisers--would get preferred treatment. Content from these providers would have first priority on our computer and television screens, while information seen as undesirable, such as peer-to-peer communications, could be relegated to a slow lane or simply shut out.

Fast Forward: A Google-Microsoft Alliance?

This is a little too fast forward for us.

Apple’s business today is a unique synthesis of fashion and function. That is a powerful combination so long as both parts can be sustained. It is astonishingly easy and enjoyable to use the Mac and Apple’s other hardware and software products, all of which are tightly integrated. And that is exactly what potentially threatens not only Google and Microsoft, but Yahoo, AOL, MySpace, and even Comcast, Verizon Wireless and Tivo — any company that aims to build electronic entertainment or productivity-related services for consumers.

Wireless Faster Than Cable Internet

Someday maybe it'll be normal when the wireless is fatster than the cable.

Probably in the meantime I need to look and see if there is some easy way of getting to a Comcast engineer. Worthless script monkey CSRs are not going to be able to help me with this issue, as there is something really “odd” going on with my connection. I’ve got mounds of information at this point and hopefully someone with access to the Comcast network can take it and look at what is going on once it enters their network and figure out WTF is going on. At this point I’ve just been leaving my laptop hooked up to the VPN at my Dad’s house so I have some upload or using the Verizon air card I have. Sad part is, both work better at this point for doing anything (besides straight download) than my straight Comcast connection. Here at home my Verizon card is getting 222K Down and 115K Up. Absolutely pathetic when your wireless card is faster than your cable connection.

Wireless ... In the Car?

phones police car computer Police cars may be a model for the kind of communications you can expect in your car.

Yep, it works like a charm. I got a cellular wireless card the other day and got to use it today. Driving from State College to Philadelphia today my wife pulled out my PowerBook, slid the card in, connected to Verizon and spent the last two hours of trip on the Internet. This is a very good thing. Opens up a whole host of opportunities. The speed of the card isn’t what we are used to in the broadband world we live in, but being able to get online while driving is amazing … pages loaded just fine, we didn’t drop a connection once. It was great being able to keep up on the Nittany Lions while she read the news and browsed blogs. As a matter of fact I am using now that I am sitting in a sports bar watching the second half to write this post. I hate to beat a dead horse with this, but I am amazed.

So, this train wreck of a situation is pissing me off. The Call

Congratulations and good luck!

In other news, the venerable Verizon Wireless called last night and invited me to a job expo next week! Can you imagine? 4 million people in this state and they called me! :-D Well, I’m going. The shareholders of my company —which shall remain unnamed— voted to have Verizon purchase us today anyway. May as well see if I can beat my colleagues to the punch! Seriously though, this is the first ‘real’ opportunity I’ve had since August. I’ve interviewed with Verizon twice in my life already, but it’s never worked out on either side. Philadelphia Chooses Earthlink For Wireless Network

phones earthlink logo The telcos hate having cities provide wireless, but it looks like Earthlink is providing wireless to Philadelphia and Google wants to give it away in San Francisco.

Philadelphia has selected EarthLink from among 12 vendors that bid on implementing a citywide wireless network. Key to the city’s choice of EarthLink, said Dianah Neff, CIO of Philadelphia, was the company’s proposal that it fund all of the infrastructure for and management of the network. Critics of the city’s planned municipal network, including Verizon, which offers similar services locally, had argued that taxpayer money should not be used for projects that compete with incumbent businesses. EarthLink’s proposal sidesteps that problem.

Cingular Opposes In-Flight Cell Usage

I wonder if product liability is an issue in case someone happened to be using a cell phone when a plane happened to fall out of the sky.

In a rare corporate display of coming out against something they stand to benefit from, Cingular has sent a missive to the FAA indicating their position against lifting the in-flight cellphone ban. Their official take on the matter is that there is “a time and a place for wireless phone conversations, and seldom does that include the confines of an airplane flight.” They even go so far as to say that, should the ban be lifted, they would be encouraging its customers to refrain from in-flight talking and use data services only (”tap, not talk”). However, oddly, in a joint letter to the FCC with Verizon, they indicated they might support lifting the ban if safeguards were in place to protect consumers on the ground from interference. So… which is it, dudes?

That's what I did. A year after moving to Los Angeles from New York, I was reading my Verizon Wireless bill and noticed I was still paying New York taxes. New York, as it happens, has the highest state and local taxes in the country: 16.2% (if you add federal charges, it's 22.2%). I estimated I was giving my former city and state about $75 per year they didn't deserve.

411 Calls On Cell Phones Ring Up $2.2b In 2004

All that 411 revenue goes away if users can access the Internet:

Cellular companies are reluctant to say how much they make from their directory assistance services, though Verizon Wireless spokesman Paul Lemchak called it a "pretty good business."

800-Pound Gorillas Converge

Good example of pro-business politics: the cable companies won in Texas and the consumers lost.

Three former Bell companies are upgrading their networks with optical fiber so they can deliver television to consumers. It's a multibillion-dollar undertaking that will stretch out for years. But it will take even longer if SBC, Verizon and BellSouth also must secure video franchises from every city, village and hamlet where they operate.

Stinky Tech Support

Customer service is universally bad, it seems. It's always faster to find your own solution:

I did have one backup solution. If all attempts failed, I'd use Verizon's DSL software CD to make it reconfigure everything on the PC. And it worked. Makes me wonder why I called Verizon in the first place.

Verizon Opens E9-1-1 to VoIP Providers in New York

I think the telcos would be smart to charge for E911 and skim some money from the VoIP providers. It's like free money.

In what may be the first great news about enhanced 9-1-1 service for VoIP providers, Verizon announced today that it will allow VoIP providers to access its enhanced 9-1-1 infrastructure, linking VoIP callers to public safety answering points in New York City this summer. If this initial connection is successful, Verizon will extend the arrangement to other localities.

Cingular Scaling Back 3G Plans

Not clear whether this leaves Verizon a big opening.

The analysts conclude that Cingular is simply over-committed right now and does not have the resources to meet its original 3G schedule. If Cingular is scaling back its 3G plans, it could lose even more ground to rival Verizon Wireless, which launched 3G in the US at the end of 2003. Verizon is aggressively building out its EV-DO network and will likely remain the US 3G market leader, especially if Cingular pulls back on its 3G plans.

Opportunities for cross-promotions abound but are unlikely to take off on a big scale until more sophisticated multimedia messaging supplants today's simple texts. The reason is economics. Say the Boston Red Sox teams up with Verizon Wireless in a promotion to get fans to vote for their favorite player on an ESPN telecast. Today, those three companies would have to divvy up the text revenues, which average only 3 cents to 10 cents apiece in the U.S. But within two years, say analysts, multimedia messages, complete with color video and music, might...

If users switch to EDGE/3G data rapidly, this could hurt Cingular. Otherwise, it's probably a good move.

Score One For Cable Companies

The Texas legislators have really turned the screws on the telcos:

And with Verizon spending about $1,000 per home to connect residents to it's new fiber-optic network in Texas, according to a Monday Associated Press article, a slow rollout is the last thing the telecoms want. The AP article says that now the phone companies will turn to Washington for legislative relief as opposed to going to each state. Because if SBC can't win in its home state, it doesn't look good for the rest of the industry.

The Telecom Bill Is Dead

Cost and time to get video over phone just went up.

Cable companies and a coalition of Texas cities also fought the proposal, which would have allowed SBC Communications Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. to get a single statewide franchise for their planned Internet television service instead of negotiating scores of agreements with individual cities, as cable companies do.

Good for the incumbents, bad for consumers.

Cable Versus DSL

I ended up with cable instead of DSL because I ditched the land line in favor of a cell phone and the telco can't offer me video over copper (yet).

I’ve learned that I could probably live with DSL in lieu of cable. I’m at my parents home, and they’ve gone DSL from dialup. It seems to be just as zippy as our cable connection at home, and it’s a good bit less expensive. If we go with the alternative phone carrier in our area, which we’ve been talking about anyway, we can get our phone service and DSL for something like $50 a month, plus long distance (at only 5 cents a minute). And, Verizon is only about $10 more per month than that. Hmmm…

Switching From ISDN To DSL

The frustrations of dealing with broken marketing programs at Verizon:

Last time I tried to get DSL the good people at Verizon told me that to qualify for my free installation I would have to put a new line into the house, which is the kind of huckstering (FREE installation!!! Only $250 in fees!!!) that oughta get a company shut down. Let’s remember that my ISDN is a premium service that I actually pay for, every single month. Pay to get in and pay to get out.

Verizon Fios: Insanely Cheap Fiber To The Home

Just when you think wireless will take over all the last mile connections, then comes FTTH:

With friends like that, who needs colocation facilities? Seriously though, I pay several hundred dollars for a 5Mbps downstream/768k upstream package from Time Warner. With the $199 Verizon package, you can get 5Mbps of upstream server bandwidth, which would let you serve almost 40 128k MP3 streams, or over a dozen 300Kbps video streams. This kind of upstream bandwidth is also sufficient for you to hook up your TiVo or PVR to the network and watch it in full quality in some other broadband downstream location. (While DVD bitrates are sometimes 6-8Mbps,...

More on Verizon's Quest For TV in New Jersey

The Telcos are pushing the FCC to slow down the VoIP companies and, not surprisingly, the cable companies are pushing legislators to slow down the Telcos from introducing video over phone lines.

Read this very informative article on the steps that Verizon is taking to streamline the approval process to offer cable TV to its customers over its Fios FTTP network. Verizon is working the New Jersey legislators but is meeting fierce opposition from the Cable TV companies serving New Jersey: Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and US Cable.

E911 Order Raises Big Issues for Small Providers

The government has given VoIP providers 4 months to provide 911 service.

Where does this leave independent providers? Vonage, for its part, issued a obviously timed press release today saying it had worked out a deal with SBC and BellSouth to gain access to those telcos’ E911 facilities, which, when combined with a deal already in hand with Verizon, gives Vonage the ability to offer the mandated emergency calling service in three of the major four RBOCs’ regions.

This is clearly motivated by politics and lobbyists rather than economics.

Verizon Takes on Franchising in New Jersey

The pinch of VoIP must be getting the telcos to take action on video over phone (finally).

As Cynthia’s last post noted, cable/telco battles are brewing over telco-TV franchising in New Jersey and other states. Free Cell Phone TV

Is anyone suprised about an ad-based TV network? Just because it's via cell-phone doesn't mean TV can't take advantage of an American tradition.

An estimated 10 million cell phones with Windows' Media Player software inside will be able to receive and display programming from the Digital Music Video Network when it debuts in mid-June with Top 40 music videos, organizers said Tuesday. Rather than paying a monthly fee for the programming, all viewers need do is wait through 15-second advertisements sandwiched between the music videos, and pay the data-service fee for downloading all those bits onto their cell phone.

Do We Really Need Voicemail Instructions?

It's hard dealing with lowest-common-denominator products:

Sometimes I believe that companies do things to make us feel stupid. I am so sick of the detailed voicemail instructions. And yes, I do understand that not all Americans have had a cell phone since the 90's, but how hard can it be? Right now, my favorite is Verizon. A few of my friends have them as a service provider, and they rarely answer the phone. So, I find myself listening to it quite often and it makes me more and more mad each time.

MCI Shareholders Speak

This transaction should have been a reality TV program.

Shareholder disapproval by withholding votes only sends a message to the board if the directors believe that (1) disapproval would grow and they might not be re-elected next time (unlikely) or (2) the disapproval will result in a price decline. Of course here, the MCI directors are in the quintessential final period and have agreed to receive a certain price for their shares from Verizon. So, the withholding of votes may prove to be an effete gesture.

Municipal Wireless Networks Coming

WiFi has started to become a utility.

The Reuters article below captures how SF and other Bay Area cities are lagging behind Philadelphia, Lompoc, and Madison in deploying low-cost or free wireless for their residents. MA has been leading the effort to move deployment forward in SF and recently succeeded in convincing the city to initiate a $300k feasability study...but SBC, Comcast and Verizon are fighting against it with all their might.

"With so many other issues challenging municipalities today, why on earth should cities waste millions of taxpayer dollars to compete with carriers already offering high speed Internet service?" said Allison Remsen, spokeswoman for the U.S. Telecom Association, which represents incumbents like SBC Communications Inc. and Verizon Communications.

Cablevision Seen Taking Verizon Customers

Very smart marketing. Cablevision is hitting Verizon before Verizon can attach Cablevision with its video service.

Cablevision Systems Corp. is likely to steal away more of Verizon’s customers in the New York area in the coming months, after it upgraded its systems to allow customers who switch to its digital voice service to take their phone numbers with them.

Consumers are the big winners in all this.

The Aftermath of the MCI Contest

It ain't over until the fat lady sings, as you probably know.

To be sure, MCI's shareholders and Chief Executive Michael Capellas owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. Notebaert. His persistence kept forcing Verizon to raise its offer, which is now 25% higher than its original $6.75 billion agreement to acquire MCI in February

The Verizon-MCI combination isn't final until it is approved by MCI shareholders and state and federal regulators. There is concern that the industry's consolidation could lead to higher phone rates.

Finding the Right Cellular Carrier

I'm having the same problem: how do you get the carrier you want and the handset you want. It'd be great if the U.S. market carriers becamse handset agnostic.

Lately I've been researching my options regarding new cell phones. I currently use Verizon Wireless, and well, their phone selection sucks. Referring to my last post, why would Verizon not want to appeal to its customers by offering top of the line cell phone design. The ONLY thing pulling me away from Verizon is the selection of phones... I love the network, I love the service I get, I'm very happy with my bill, but when it comes to getting an attractive phone, it just can't happen.

More MCI Madness

Up, up, up.

Verizon now has five days to respond and can boost its offer again or walk away with a nice financial penalty.

The Verizon deal valued MCI at $23.10 per share, though two weeks ago it agreed to pay nearly $26 a share for a 13.4 percent stake in MCI from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu. That gambit fueled speculation that Verizon would offer at least that much for the rest of MCI's stock.

I am just hoping this story will go away. It was fun to cover for a while but the molasses-in-July-like back and forth movement is like watching a tennis match in slow motion. I hope Qwest wins this war as I have the consumer's best interests in mind and being the weaker of the two companies, a Qwest merger would mean the market won't be dominated by a single giant in Verizon.

If the story takes one more intestinal twist and Verizon becomes the winner, it will be the consumers who will feel the droppings of this merger on their heads. My suggestion? Wear a hat.

Is Mobile E-mail The Next O/S?

I don't think mobile email is the next O.S., but I do think voice is proving to be the next killer app on the Internet.

Or is it? At 2.4 million licensed client devices, RIM has barely scratched the surface of the mobile marketplace. In the U.S., leading wireless operator Cingular has over 50 million subscribers with Verizon Wireless running a close second -- nearly 100 million wireless subscribers. According to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), there are over 2.4 billion wireless subscribers worldwide, making RIM's BlackBerry licenses appear as small as they really are - one tenth of one percent of overall cellular...

Battle for MCI: Verizon Expects To Raise Bid

Good news for MCI: this deal keeps closing and then opening again.

This one is not just going to go away. Damn… even I am beginning to lose interest. Associated Press reports that Verizon might be contemplating a new bid for MCI, though it might not have to pay as much as $9.75 billion Qwest has offered. Verizon has a five day window to offer a new deal, and if it decides to walk away, it still will get $240 million. Many believe that unless MCI board nodded its approval for Qwest it would found itself on very slippery slope. “We expect MCI to build upon its declaration of superiority with specific acts of support, including expeditiously seeking regulatory approvals of a transaction that it considers superior and in the best interests of its shareowners,” Qwest said in a statement.

Capellas a Big Winner

Michael Capellas is handsomely rewarded:

Capellas, 50, became CEO of the struggling WorldCom in 2002, the same year it filed for bankruptcy-court protection in the shadow of expansive accounting fraud. His contract said that when he led the company out of bankruptcy, he was entitled to $12 million in restricted stock and an additional $6 million if the board found his service “exemplary.”

The board also granted the former Compaq Computer president a $5 million bonus for implementing a business transformation plan, listing MCI’s common stock on the Nasdaq and stabilizing the company’s finances, among other accomplishments. His salary was $1.6 million.

MCI has agreed to be acquired by Verizon Communications Inc., which has been engaged in a bidding war with Qwest Communications International Inc. over MCI’s assets.

Another example of horrible service - Verizon

Skype and Vonage customers recently reported customer service problems. Those problems were due to the companies' quick growth. Don't think landline phones are immune to customer service problems, though.

So I come home from a trip today and realize that I have no dial tone on my home phone. I go online, but of course, it's impossible to find a customer service number on the Verizon web site (somebody must have figured that it was too expensive in the last round of budget cuts). I finally do find a place to report the problem online...telling me that it only takes minutes to get someone on the case.

So I fill in all the information about the phone line that does not work, and just when I thought I was done with the trouble ticket the system asks me whether I checked the dial tone at the Network Interface Device (also known as NID). After clicking through a few help screens to help me understand what an NID is (and where to possibly find it), it tells me that I do not need to be a technician to figure this one out - I only need a screwdriver and an extra phone set to open that device up and test for an outside dial tone (this is called outsourcing...

VoIP Call Tracking Service

If you're running a phone campaign, here's a good VoIP tracking tool to know about. Great for small business.

Today eStara (whom I associate with their "web call me button" product), announced a SME solution that enables SMEs to use web advertising and still convert using phone as opposed to the website. If you are running a specific campaign, you can create/provision a unique phone number and eStara will track the leads to this number. This has been done for decades in the call center arena, but what's new is eStara has extended this feature into the Voice over IP realm, which enables not just call centers, but also small-to-medium sized businesses to track their campaigns as well. They offer comprehensive real-time reporting and provisioning using a web browser.

Verizon Offering 'Naked' DSL in Northeast

The markets are pushing the landline companies to offer "naked" DSL whether they want to or not.

The ability to subscribe solely to Verizon's DSL, or high-speed Internet service, could be attractive to young customers who rely primarily on their wireless plan for phone calls. It could also appeal to customers who want to try out new Internet-calling technology.

Philadelphia's Wifi Project

[On soapbox] The politicians are being really stupid to side with the Telcos on this one. When some citizens have WiFi everywhere and huge advantages in business and convenience, other citizens in WiFi-restricted areas will realize how stupid the restriction is and change their votes. Restricting WiFi is like saying you can't have cell phones because it would hurt the pay phone business. [Off soapbox]

I saw this post on slashdot this morning about Verizon and the Philadelphia municipal WiFi project and it made me angry all over again.

For a little background, the City of Philadelphia started planning to wifi up the whole city. Free, basic wifi access anywhere in the city. Sounds great. Sounds like a really awesome idea. Well, Verizon got a whiff of it and tried to block the project threatening to sue the FCC in order to make them block Philly from this project. It seems like they've worked out a deal since then but when I heard that back in November or December it reminded me of everything that is wrong with Big Business dominating our government and the Republican's habit of favoring Big Business at the expense of basic defense of the average citizen.

Verizon CEO: Can You Hear Me Now?

Not a happy Verizon customer. I have a friend with the same problem. My friend moved and his cell phone didn't work in the new apartment. Verizon offered him a new phone, but they wouldn't let him out of his contract.

I can’t believe I have a two year contract with a company who provides cellular service and the CEO, the leader, visionary etc of said company doesn’t think that cell phones should be able to work inside my house. Excuse me did I miss the bus to 2005 because I could swear that’s how cell phones were in 1995.

Read the whole thing.

Hello DSL, Goodbye Cable?

It will be very interesting to see how many people switch to phone lines and drop cable as phone companies offer more entertainment.

April 20th is when DSL is scheduled to be activated from Verizon. I guess I will have to wait and see how it performs. Other than that, I will be enjoying my last few days of my cable connection.

EVDO On Verizon

EVDO coming to Sprint and Cingular shortly.

Of course, a number of PDAs now support Bluetooth as well, but unless they also have cell phone capability (e.g., the iPAQ 6315 or similar Pocket PC phone edition) you aren’t going to be browsing the Internet through them. Speaking of which, Verizon is now launching their EVDO (Evolution Data Only) service. EVDO is a next-generation network which is truly wireless broadband. Note that Sprint and Cingular are preparing to launch their own wireless broadband networks in the near future as well. That increase bandwidth should facilitate SmartVideo, which makes television programming available for mobile devices.

Also a sign of the maturation of the SmartPhone as a platform is that Opera has just announced a version of their browser for the Windows Mobile SmartPhone. Browser wars now come to your cell phone. Cingular has also just recently announced their expanding support for Microsoft OS based phones through 2005. The main obstacle I see is user input, the menu system and muli-key press for a single character just won’t cut it for significant data input. One option to solve that issue is voice recognition, and Nokia just recently introduced a...

Verizon Attempts to Outflank Qwest

This will be an interesting corporate fight:

In the fight between Verizon Communications and Qwest Communications to take over MCI, Verizon has taken what is probably a commanding advantage over Qwest by making a deal over the weekend to buy out MCI’s largest shareholder’s 13 percent share of the company.

Verizon, the largest U.S. telecommunications company, agreed to pay Carlos Slim $1.1 billion for his 43.4 million shares of MCI.

Despite Verizon’s move, Qwest has still not given up in its bid to buy MCI. Qwest executives met with bankers on Sunday to consider their next move. Qwest had worked out a deal to raise additional equity to support their bid from a group of MCI shareholders who oppose Verizon’s bid.

But with the Verizon acquisition of Mr. Slim’s shares, which makes Verizon MCI’s largest shareholder, it is doubtful whether Qwest can count on enough of MCI’s shareholders to overcome Verizon’s bid.

Mr. Slim was one of those who opposed Verizon’s bid. MCI’s board of directors has repeatedly turned down Qwest’s bids, saying that Verizon is a financially superior company and that the Verizon bid is favored by MCI’s customers.

More FTTH Announcements from Verizon

I'm not sure whether it's better to invest in wireless infrastructure or FTTH (Fiber to the Home).

Verizon has recently announced the deployment of FTTH in the city of Lynn and the towns of Nahant and Swampscott in Massachussetts.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference More FTTH Announcements from Verizon:

VoiceWing Adds Plans

This blogger has lots of great questions on Verizon's VoIP strategy now that AOL has entered the VoIP market.

With all the net catching on to AOL's VoIP announcements this week, I overlooked the Verizon announcement about VoiceWing and a new lower cost pricing plan.

While nothing in the announcement is breakthrough, one has to realize that should Verizon be successful in the acquisition of MCI, then the VoIP market becomes much more of a strategy for them.

One has to continue to wonder what all this means for Delta Three. With SBC and Verizon as customers, and with both buyers getting lots of IP and VoIP in house intellectual capital and intellectual property, it is possible to presume that the agreements with those companies for VoIP related services may dry up.

One also has to wonder why Verizon let Genuity get purchased by Level3, when they had first option to buy it.

Comments on Verizon Deal

This is a good point about the Verizon/MCI deal:

And Verizon shareholders are going to show what can happen to share prices when an unwanted deal ($7.6 billion acquisition of MCI) goes forward.
